First published as Johnson’s Life of London, now released with new material following Jubilee and Olympic celebrations in 2012. This updated history of London shows that the ingenuity, diversity, creativity and enterprise of the city are second to none.
London’s buildings may be famous, London’s history may be lengthy and illustrious, but it is London’s people who have given, and continue to give, the city its exuberant and exhilarating profile.
London of the Olympic and Jubilee summer displayed Londoners on a world stage, but this is a city which has always lived on the energy and skills of its people, drawn to the capital from all over the country and the world.
Boris Johnson shares with us his pleasure at London’s vitality and unique character, and selects the people who in his view have contributed so much to the spirit of London – some very famous figures, some more obscure. He includes everyone from the Romans to one of the author’s predecessors as mayor, Dick Whittington; from John Wilkes (a strong upholder of the freedom of the press) to J.W. Turner; from Chaucer to Gandhi, and through to modern times.
Due to the limitations of some ereaders, it is not possible to show some special characters.
The Spirit of London eBook Boris Johnson
In a bout of almost feverish pride I read this book with great enjoyment. Johnson has a flair for wrapping up history in anecdotes and easy to understand and well paced prose. It is a book that does exactly what it says on the tin and we are left in no doubt about the general feeling of the author to the city of London. It is, though, more than just a pulp of mushiness, it does contain information, data if you will, and facts and insights that are interesting and strangely make me feel better placed for the next general knowledge quiz.
I really got the feeling that Johnson had spent time visiting the many places, hidden or forgotten nooks, noted in the book and there was a tangible sense of each of them transmitted onto the page.
Splendid, uplifting stuff.

The Spirit of London eBook Boris Johnson Reviews
The Spirit of London is informative, entertaining, and easy to read. I return to some chapters from time to time. I have a number of friends who also rate this book as excellent.
Loved it . Learnt lots about people whose names I have only heard or seen in rhymes. Must admit had to use dictionary once or twice ..well a few times.
Really enjoyed Boris Johnson's review of London's history - making the major historical figures into real people and putting them in their historical perspective. A fantastic way to enjoy reading history & prepare for our upcoming visit to this most important city.
Very Nice!
Marvellous insite to London and its past characters
Great writing. Lots of information which was new to me. Very entertaining. He is clearly passionate about London. Highly recommended.
Really enjoyed this book. Didn't really get to know the real Boris as this was obviously written in the way he wants you to see him. However, really enjoyed reading it, he has a great sense of humour as well as a great sense of London history. Well worth the read.
